Soeza - Why Do You Do?

This is the second album from the Bristol based sixpiece Soeza (or Soe’za if you prefer), who produce a sound that a band named such will inevitably produce: jazzy, chilled, and moody – not to mention complex, progressive, and cathartic. With dual male/female vocals, and a generous splattering of horns, it's a livelier prospect than it might sound, with plenty of angular outbursts and clever idiosyncrasies around the corner. The racier parts usually go hand in hand with the male side of the vocals, and pad out a soothing post-rockish side with something more spiky and post-hardcore shaped.

On the female vocals side, we get what you inevitably get when combining a French horn and a soulful voice: a seductive, sultry, coquettish petition for your undivided attention. At full whack, Soeza sound somewhat like a demented arts carnival, with the more soporific aspects representing the calm before/after said carnival. It's not quite as black and white as that of course, with both sides of the band commonly meeting up in a grey much like that of the cover art, somewhere amongst the impulsive clutter of the songs. And it mostly works in favour for the band you'll be glad to know, making Why Do You Do? well worth the time it’ll take to figure out.
