The Graduate - Anhedonia Sometimes it’s hard to give a good reason why one fairly unoriginal, imitative record is enjoyable (or at least tolerable) while the next is not. Illinois’ The Graduate aren’t original, treading some easily recognisable emo-indie lines on their debut full length Anhedonia. But something about them, something perhaps in the jangly pop dramatics, or in the surprisingly distinctive vocals, rescues them from faceless mediocrity. Maybe I’m shallow, and it’s just the unarguable catchiness of the thing. There does seem to be a songwriting know-how here however, an inherent ability that hints at greater things (or at least more interesting things), especially when they outgrow the generic emo trappings. But hey, even if they don’t, Anhedonia is still a fun enough record to sing along to. matt |
