Army Of Me - Citizen

Army of Me’s songwriting is deceptive. Deceptive enough that the Washington DC trio’s debut full-length for Doghouse can sound fairly dull on the first listen. But it’s the kind of songwriting that slowly seeps into you, and what you first may have taken for bland radio-tuned indie rock soon leaves a more substantial residue. If the subtlety sneaks up on you, this is primarily because of the band’s melodramatic tendencies stealing the initial limelight. Vince Scheuerman’s vocals are geared toward these anthemic moments, and he has a knack of hurling out more than a few uplifting choruses (see “Rise”, “Better Run”). His delivery does waver a little at times – he hasn’t quite got the presence to carry off the snarled “time for cursing” on “Meet You At The Mouth” – but he’s not far away, and that pretty much sums up the band: they need some time to grow into the mature rock outfit they’re aiming for, but they fill it out well enough for now to make it worth the wait..
